Elmley update – April 2015
Spring
Our waders are now beginning to settle down despite the recent cool, windy conditions. The majority appear to be biding their time – no rush until its a little warmer! Please do take care along the entry road and please stay in your cars to avoid disturbing the hen birds.
The eagle-eyed may spot sitting snipe – lets hope we hear some drumming this year. The floods in front of the hides are packed at the moment, in particular, avocet are in good numbers again which makes a wonderful sight and sound!
Calving and land management
Calving of the Elmley herd is well under-way on the other side of the Island. The early mothers are returning in small numbers with their calves at heel. They make a lovely sight and are an essential part of the grazing marsh. We will manage them in small numbers to ensure the grass does not grow too long for wader chicks over the coming months. All efforts are focused on maintaining the best conditions possible for the breeding season so its down to the birds now. We’ll keep you updated on our survey results. Lets hope we can come close to last year’s total of 462 fledged lapwing chicks. Thank you and good luck to our volunteer surveyors too! They are in serious training this month!
Sea wall litter picking
