Steve
It is with great sadness that we write this; Steve Gordon passed away late last night, Saturday 6th December, after a long battle with cancer. He slipped away peacefully, watched over by his family. Steve, the farm manager had been at Elmley for over 20 years but actually came to Elmley first as a shepherd when he was 18.
Many of you will have known Steve and he would have been a familiar presence on the marsh with his dog, Max.
Elmley, his home for so many years, was very special to Steve and he had an incredible understanding of the marsh.
Elmley is a testament to his skill and passion as a farmer, shepherd and naturalist. And his patience, generosity and good humour will be hugely missed by a great many. If you are visiting, please take a couple of minutes to remember Steve in the place he loved most. A memorial service will be held in the New Year, we will let you know details.
The Wind, John Clare
The wind blows happily on every thing
The very weeds that shake beside the fold
Bowing, they dance, do any thing but sing
And all the scene is lovely to behold:
Blue mists of morning, evenings of gold.
How beautiful the wind will play with Spring:
Flowers beam with every colour light beholds,
Showers o’er the landscape fly on wet pearl wings
And winds stir up unnumbered pleasant things.
